MASTER CLASS FOR BEGINNING AND INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

by Matthew Harre

AMSF Master Classes have become events where advanced students refine and fine-tune their pieces. Those students were once a fledgling group and very insecure, but with years of study and performing behind them, they have become quite accomplished. Now, the high level of playing and the difficulty of the pieces performed at these master classes can be so intimidating that beginning and intermediate AMSF students rarely sign up.

The purpose of this master class is to provide a safe haven for beginning pianists to play for a different teacher and learn from one another. No advanced students should sign up for this one, though they may attend as audience.

Defining this group of prospective students is difficult and is ultimately self-selecting. Guidelines for participation include the amount of time a student has been studying and repertoire. Study should be limited to just a few years. Repertoire should be limited to pieces no more complex than Schumann's Scenes From Childhood or the less difficult Chopin Preludes. Popular tunes, arrangements and pieces from teaching method books are welcome repertoire.
